There are three good reasons not to have a pop at the Halifax campaign. The first is that it has been so palpably successful that sniping at it makes you look something of a creative nitwit.

Another consideration to stay your pen mid-dip over the vitriol jar is that the men and women of DLKW, the agency behind the ads, are delightful and brilliant people whom you feel no desire to wound. Then you see them armed with enigmatic smiles and DB9s and you realise you're unlikely to make much of a dent.

The final case for the defence is that it is a proper, big advertising campaign that cares about the brand, the client and, arguably, the audience, not about the awards juries.

I appreciate that about it, but I still can't bring myself to like it. In fact, increasingly, I hate it. Howard must have the most smackable face since Ricky Ponting's and clearly now sees himself as a cross between Gene Kelly and Anthony of Padua. …
