Unemployment : Eu Jobless Rate Inches Up

In the eurozone, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate stood at 7.2% in May, unchanged compared with April. It was 7.5% in May 2007. In the EU, the unemployment rate was 6.8% in May, compared with 6.7% in April (7.2% in May 2007), according to Eurostat figures released on 1 July.

Eurostat estimates that 16.171 million men and women in the EU27 (of them 11.199 million in the eurozone) were unemployed in May 2008. Compared with April 2008, the number of unemployed people increased by 42,000 and 67,000, respectively. Compared with May 2007, unemployment was down by 0.9 million in the EU27 and by 0.2 million in the eurozone.

The lowest unemployment rates were registered in Denmark (2.7%) and the Netherlands (2.9%), and the highest in Slovakia (10.5%) and Spain (9.9%).
