Summer is here and usually I greet the season by buying a new pair of sneakers. In the past, I've snagged red Converse, white Nikes and a nifty grey and pink combo from a street vendor.

But this year, I'm still wearing my old green LL Bean jobs. They're looking a little frayed. The soles have worn spots and there's a spot by the toe where my bunion is testing the mettle of the mesh.

I could buy new ones. But I'm not feeling like I want to. I know where to get the shoes replaced. But I'm not in any hurry. I feel the weight of the economic news, loca1 and global. Given what's going on, the hole in my shoe seems rather trivial.

The basmati rice my family likes has tripled in price this year. I still buy it--but I can't help wonderig how families in Myanmar are managing this jump.

A close friend emails me to say she won't be paying me a visit in New York this summer as planned. …
