Economies in Transition: Promoting Foreign Trade

At a recent workshop organized jointly by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and ITC for economies in transition, hosted by the Government of Poland, trade promotion strategies and related institutional infrastructures were reviewed in the context of the new international trading rules and regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). During this major international gathering of trade promotion specialists from countries of central and eastern Europe, the newly independent states of the former USSR and OECD, trade promotion issues and problems of transition economies, along with possible solutions, were reviewed in the framework of the Uruguay Round agreements. Directions for expanded international technical cooperation activities were also outlined. The event was financed by the Government of Switzerland.

The participants included 57 high-level trade promotion officials from Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States.

Also present were representatives of the WTO, UNDP, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD, plus senior OECD and ITC officials. …
