If the arguments for and against homework were clear-cut, we would long ago have reached a consensus. As it is, for everyone who rolls their eyes at the thought of six-year-olds finishing a worksheet before ploughing through their reading book, there are those who see it as an essential adjunct to what is being taught in school. LCP--not surprisingly--are firmly in the latter camp. In a thought provoking introduction, they point out that whilst 'the link between homework and educational achievement is tenuous', the fact that most high-achieving schools set great store by it must give us pause for thought. Rightly, they go on to stress its potential for developing a child's sense of pride, the habits of responsibility and commitment, and as a way to more actively involve parents in the educational process.
