UMI and OCLC Join to Provide Library Access to ProQuest Direct

UMI and OCLC have announced an agreement that will allow libraries access to UMI's online service, ProQuest Direct, within their existing library automation system without investing in additional hardware or software.

Under terms of the agreement, UMI will license OCLC's Z39.50 server technology (SiteSearch and WebZ). This will open up access to ProQuest Direct for all libraries that are Z39.59 compliant. The service will be commercially available in July, according to UMI.

Launched last September, UMI's ProQuest Direct provides online access to an extensive collections of published material. Currently offering 1,100 titles in full text, 900 in full image, and 1,400 in full text and full image, UMI plans to increase the collection to over 3,000 titles in full text and full image formats by 1997.

In addition, ProQuest Direct is updated daily so library patrons receive access to the most current business, reference, and scholarly information available. UMI offers subscription pricing for all of its major databases on ProQuest Direct so libraries can offer unlimited access to their patrons with predictable pricing. …
