Enhancements to Derwent's LitAlert, Patent Status File

Article excerpt

Derwent has announced enhancements to LitAlert, the online and printed product that offers a way to monitor litigation concerning patents and trademarks, and major improvements to its Patent Status File, an index that tracks more than 25 types of post-issue actions that may affect a U.S. patent's status.

The enhancements to LitAlert include new processing techniques to improve the timeliness and completeness of the information. One prime example is the 70 percent additional filings being added each month. In addition, the printed publication is now delivered days following the final notification from the USPTO and has a new look to enhance user friendliness.

LitAlert contains records from lawsuit actions reported to the United States Patent and Trademark Office by the 94 U.S. District Courts. Both the printed publication and online file contain the same information for each case record. Each record includes details on the specific litigation taking place for that particular patent or trademark, including the action taken, the court in which the action is taking place, the docket number of the case, the plaintiffs and defendants, filing data, and judgment, if applicable. Each record also contains several fields of identification, such as patent or trademark number; date of issue; patent or trademark title; names of record for inventors, owners, and assignees; and classification title and number.

For easy referencing, the monthly publication is separated into two sections, Patents and Trademarks, and the beginning of the book contains an index of all the patent and trademark cases, listing them by the title, plaintiff, defendant, court, and case number. The printed product is available as a yearly subscription for $345 and includes 12 monthly editions along with an Annual Cumulative Index.

The online database, available through the Orbit system as file LITA, contains case records from 1973 forward, is updated weekly, and provides all fields as searchable. …
