From the Way We Travel to the Food We Eat, Westerners Are on the Leading Edge of Eco-Friendly Trends

MY ROLE AS EDITOR often includes acting as a kind of ambassador of the West, visiting with advertisers in different areas of the country to help them understand what makes our region so unique. Last year, I spent many days in offices from Chicago to New York talking about this issue you're holding in you're holding in your hands, which celebrates living green. From the way we travel to the food we eat, Westerners are on the leading edge of eco-friendly trends.

Many of the advertisers were skeptical when I said we were planning this special theme issue. "Every magazine is doing the green thing," they said. "What's so different about Sunset?"

For one thing, you could say we practically invented the idea of the green issue. Our first article on Yosemite appeared in our May 1898 inaugural issue; our first on solar power, in 1903. John Muir, conservationist and Sierra Club founder, even wrote for Sunset in the early 20th century. Ever since, we've called attention to wilderness conservation, water-wise gardening, recycling, and innovative home remodeling and technology. …
