Yikes! Ike! Galveston 'Daily News' Braces for Hurricane

With Hurricane Ike set to barrel down on south Texas, the Daily News of Galveston County -- which sits smack in the path of the storm -- is making clear the feelings of local residents in its Friday paper.

And even getting biblical.

"Yikes! Here comes Ike," the Page One headline says Friday. In addition, the paper has no bones about essentially running for cover, telling readers its offices will be closed today, although coverage continues on its Web site, and that delivery will be disrupted.

"The Daily News is planning to publish Friday's edition early to give carriers extra time to deliver it. The Daily News offices will be closed at noon today because of Hurricane Ike," Editor Heber Taylor wrote in a blog item Thursday. "Saturday's edition will be distributed with Sunday's paper.

"Newspaper carriers may not be able to reach some areas of the county. In those areas where the paper cannot be delivered, the newspapers will be saved and delivered when conditions permit," he adds.

Taylor also wrote that "because of possible disruptions of newspaper delivery to home subscribers during Hurricane Ike, the Friday and Saturday print editions of The Daily News will be made available to all readers as PDF pages at galvnews. …
