Eric Benet: Returning Home and Reclaiming His Roots, Romantic Singer Moves on with His Life and Love

Eric Benet is back with the romantic music that works for the boudoir or a banquet. His third solo effort, Love & Life, will leave fans wanting more. Collaborating with his longtime production partner Demonte Posey and writer/producer/cousin George Nash Jr., Benet returned to his Milwaukee roots to record this CD, exercising complete creative control for the first time in his career. The first single "You're The Only One" is in the Top 10 and heading for No. 1 on R&B charts. This recording finds the artist in an upbeat and celebratory mode, rather than the contemplative mood of his 2004 Hurricane. Since his divorce from actress Halle Berry, Benet has recorded vocals on jazz albums for artists Wayman Tisdale, George Duke, Boney James and others, and he has a recurring role on the MTV scripted show Kaya as a music producer. Benet recently chatted with EBONY about his new CD and life "post-Halle."

Why was it important for you to record this CD at home in Milwaukee? So much of this record is going back to the roots of R&B; every song is almost a tribute. I said if I'm going to do an album going back to the real, let me go back to where I started and do the whole record with no outside producers, no label coming in telling me to work with the "new hot kid." Just let me go home and work with my Milwaukee crew to make this record as creatively and artistically cohesive and pure as I possibly can. This was the very first time in my career that I could just do the whole record the way I wanted to. …
