MOST, Inc. has begun shipping its new Jupiter 2, a 2.6 GB Direct-Overwrite Magneto-Optical (MO) drive that has a write transfer rate that is up to 100 percent faster than existing optical drives. The new ISO-compliant 5 1/4-inch multifunction drive represents a major break-through for the MO industry because it combines double-speed performance with quadruple-capacity media, according to MOST, or Mass Optical Storage Technologies. Jupiter 2 is a solution for a wide range of general network and document imaging storage/retrieval applications.

Last year, MOST said it was the first optical drive producer to deliver an ISO-standard 2.6 GB 5 1/4-inch multifunction optical disk drive--Jupiter 1. The next-generation drive, Jupiter 2, combines MOST's experience in producing OMAs (opto-mechanical assemblies) with Nikon's patented LIM-DOW (Light Intensity Modulation-Direct Overwrite) technology. The LIM-DOW technology permits the MOST drive to carry out the overwrite process in a single pass at a full 3600 rpm, rather than the slower, two-pass process required by earlier technology drives. To further enhance performance, a 1 MB buffer (4 MB buffer optional) is also included.

As a result, the drive provides an internal sustained read and write transfer rate of up to 4 MB/sec. …
