IT'S ANYONE'S GUESS whether we'll elect an African-American or a woman to the West Wing on November 4--but it looks like the year of change won't end at the White House. The openly gay population of Capitol Hill expects to see a 50% increase (from two to three) in the form of Jared Polis, a Democrat from Colorado's second congressional district, who, if he wins as expected, will be the first openly gay male nonincumbent elected to Congress.

A 33-year-old entrepreneur who cofounded online greeting card pioneer BlueMountainArts.com as well as two charter schools in the Boulder area, Polls is running on a platform that includes ending the war in Iraq, cutting health care costs, and replacing No Child Left Behind with a policy that he says actually works. And although his district is heavily liberal ("The chances of a Republican winning in this district are zero," one Colorado College professor told Time magazine), Polls still has to contend with the Wild West's conservative social values.

So what have voters in the Rocky Mountain State had to say about his sexual orientation? "Not much," Polis says. "The Republicans frequently use fear, whether it's fear of terrorism or fear of people who aren't like you, to get votes. …
