Dear Marketers,

Since you've decided to start the holiday season early (and I can't say I blame you since it does appear that the world as we know it is ending), here are a few pointers on how to get my share of wallet this holiday season.

Tell me something I don't know. Holiday ads that hype the same themes you use all year will wash past me unnoticed. What have you got this season that's new? Different? Worthwhile? I've been here on the planet all year and it's not like I haven't seen your previous advertising.

Convince me your product has value. This will not be a good year for pointless trinkets. What does your product do? Mean? Offer?

Quit pretending you're doing me a favor. No matter what you say, I'll never believe you can make my holiday shopping easy, stress-free, or inexpensive. So let's drop that fiction this year, I'm really not in the mood. …
