Olympus CD-Recorder Breaks the $500 Barrier

Olympus America, Inc.'s Digital and Imaging Systems Group has announced a 29 percent price reduction for its CD-R2x4, from $699 to $499. The CD-R2x4 is a multisession CD-Recorder bundled with complete mastering software for Macintosh and Windows. The external configuration was also reduced, from $899 to $649.

PC Today chose the Olympus CD-R2x4 as the Best Buy and called it "our favorite" in the November 1996 issue.

The CD-R2x4 is one of the quickest dual-speed CD-R drives, Olympus says, with an average seek time of less than 214 ms. This performance is complemented by a large 1-MB buffer, which minimizes a condition called buffer under-run (a common cause of failed CD writes). The CD-R2x4 includes Adaptec CD-Creator software, which uses Windows 95-type Wizards to write CD-ROMs. CD-Creator walks the user through the creation process step-by-step. Olympus is also one of the first companies to support Sony's CD-RFS packet-writing software, which allows users to drag files from their Windows 95 desktop directly to a CD or save files directly to a CD from any application. …
