Women Leaders Explore Myths and Realities of Leadership

Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) offered its members an opportunity to engage in extended dialogue about the myths and realities facing women leaders today through an innovative workshop with WIMG members and national leaders.

Since its summer meeting, WIMG and its Board of Directors, led by its president, JoAnn Boscia, council president, Lakewood, Ohio, has been intent on tackling the issues facing women leaders in local government. Issues such as governance, campaign fundraising, addressing constituent issues, and more emerged during WIMG's three-hour two-part session focusing on the survival strategies of leadership.

Part One of this session was devoted to remarks by AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Linda Chavez-Thompson. With almost 30 years of experience in leadership and now at the top of a prominent labor movement, Chavez-Thompson talked about what she has learned in her career. In talking about her goals, she said, "We in city government and the labor movement have the same goals, the same visions. I proposed that we work together, talk together and maybe even dream together as we never have before."

In relating to women session participants about how she has climbed the ladder of success and how she has made it to the top, she said that it hasn't all been easy. She discussed how she had to gain the respect of her colleagues and the respect of the unions for what she believed in and how she went about successfully doing her job. not the end of the story."

In Part Two of this session, WIMG Board member Elizabeth Hayden-Kniss moderated a panel discussion to offer a varying viewpoints from WIMG board members including Mary Pinkett, councilwoman, New York, NY; Martha Wong, councilwoman, Houston, Texas; and Gwen Chandler-Thompson, councilwoman-at-large, Jacksonville, Florida. …
