Follett Software Company's That's A Fact, Jack!, an interactive multimedia CD-ROM for grades four through 10, has received the National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval award. According to the company, the high-energy Macintosh-based program creates excitement about reading and presents theme-based questions about books that enhance students' abilities to interpret and evaluate materials. Follett Software Company, a vendor of library-automation products and a publisher of educational CD-ROMS, introduced That's A Fact, Jack! in May of last year.

The National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval program is an independent testing procedure conducted to judge a variety of products introduced and marketed to the parent/child consumer market. Sitting on the board of the National Parenting Center are Peter Neumeyer, Ph.D., a recognized authority of children's literature in America, author of numerous books and columns, and a contributing reviewer of children's books for The New York Times; Evelyn Petersen, a family/parenting consultant, early-childhood educator, Head Start consultant, and nationally syndicated columnist with parenting columns appearing in more than 200 newspapers each week; and Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D., a psychologist, learning specialist, nationally known expert in the field of human development and childhood learning behavior, and author of the books In Their Own Way and The Radiant Child.

Product testing for the Seal of Approval involves a multistep process conducted over an eight-week period. Parents, children, and educators are given the opportunity to examine products, and are encouraged to play with, read about, and judge -- by the reactions of the children -- each product's quality. …
