IT'S A STORY ABOUT FAMILIES AND war. From 1943 to '46, four of Martin Daly's five children were scattered around the globe, all of them serving the war effort. Unable to keep up with individual letters, Martin compiled his children's missives from the front into a family newsletter called The Daly News. "Every Tuesday night he went down to the basement and spread the mail out on the pool table," says Jonathan Gillard Daly, Martin's grandson. "He'd take a paragraph here and there from each letter so every person would be heard from--news from the South Seas, or Panama. And he'd include his own news from Milwaukee." When Martin's oldest son, Jonathan's father, died in 1980, Jonathan turned to the weekly newsletters as a way of dealing with his parent's death. "Reading them was a great opportunity to better know my father," Daly says. "The guy in these journals is 25 years old. They showed me a whole different side of him. …
