EXCLUSIVE: Big Gains among Top 30 Newspaper Web Sites

There were big year-over-year gains to be had among several of the top 30 newspaper Web sites for November.

The Detroit News soared 232% to 1.9 million uniques in November compared to the same period a year ago, according to the latest data from Nielsen Online.

The Star Tribune in Minneapolis: up 265% to 3.5 million uniques. Politico spiked 203% to 4.1 million. In Los Angeles, the LAT was up 143% in November to 11.1 million uniques landing the site in the No. 2 position, with just slightly more audience than WashingtonPost.com.

The Daily News Online in New York grew 120% to 5.8 million. And MLive, which serves Advance's newspapers in Michigan, increased 130% to 2.1 million.

Below is the list of the top 30 newspaper Web sites based on U.S. based panels provided by Nielsen (owned by E&P's parent company). The percent change compares November 2008 uniques with November 2007 uniques. Also keep in mind there are several reasons why traffic fluctuates, including news events.
