SwetsWise: Customized Subscription Support

Article excerpt

Swets is introducing another new tool to its SwetsWise product line just in time for the ALA Midwinter Meeting: SwetsWise Selection Support.

Billed as "the most complete evaluation and analysis tool currently available for making collection development decisions," SwetsWise Selection Support is designed to streamline workflow and gather the most pertinent facts to extract the best value from any library collection.

"In these tight economic times, this solution offers a good window into cost-peruse while providing a deep analysis of a collection," says Peg Marshall, director of marketing and business development at Swets. For people involved in library purchasing decisions, "this makes their job so much easier," she says. The tool saves libraries time and trouble by prepopulating usage statistics and subscription data, and additional subscription information can also be added as needed. The tool is "good to go right out of the box," says Marshall.

Marshall also says that Swets worked closely with its advisory board in the development phase to leverage the board's collective knowledge and continue to build the SwetsWise product line. The result was the creation of SwetsWise Selection Support that offers a three-step process into understanding subscription collections. First, libraries can see the data they have in their collections; second, they can add data where needed by entering non-Swets titles manually; and third, they can create standard or customized reports (monthly, quarterly, once a year, or twice a year).

The resulting data helps librarians analyze their collections to make more informed budget decisions. Librarians can gather usage statistics with subscription information in a single intuitive interface that uses the ScholarlyStats platform to collect usage statistics; they can then integrate this data with subscription details and price information in SwetsWise subscription tools. The new tool provides prepopulated information on subscriptions, price, and usage for all Swets-ordered journals. Users can also customize SwetsWise Selection Support by adding data manually from other subscriptions for a comprehensive overview of their collections.

Once the subscription information is loaded, the tool can also generate specific reports including calculating the price-per-use of a subscription, which offers a way to analyze subscription cost for better future decisions. "Users can calculate cost-per-use for the platform or cost-pertitle," says Sri Rajan, Swets' electronic products manager for the North American region." Or the new Trend Analysis report can compare two years together to determine how the electronic collection is being used from one year to another. …
