BY NOVEMBER 7, Amy Balliett had had enough. On Election Night, the 26-year-old Seattle resident went to sleep happy that Barack Obama had been elected 44th president of the United States. She awoke, however, to find that her marriage to her wife, Jessica Trejo, hung in the balance. California (as well as Arizona and Florida) had voted to ban marriage equality, possibly rescinding the rights bestowed by her nuptials and the other 18,000 ceremonies performed in the Golden State between May and November. At that moment, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

After conferring with her friend Willow Witte, who had written a blog post asking cyberspace where she could direct her hunger for action, Balliett launched JoinTheImpact. com on the Friday after the election. By Sunday the server had crashed twice after her call for protests in all 50 states the following weekend brought 10,000 visitors to her site.
