Good news from an art school. Yes, good news from an art school. The Scottish Funding Council, which distributes over 1.6bn [pounds sterling] of public funds to colleges and universities on behalf of the Scottish government, 'is prepared to commit up to 50m [pounds sterling]' towards the first phase of redeveloping Glasgow School of Art. One caveat is that it needs to see a 'business case' from the GSA's director, Professor Seona Reid, but that both parties are going public about the plans is encouraging. The Reid directorship is very keen on delivering, and it has been tough on efficiency and estate management, as well as vigorous at fundraising. The Mackintosh building is currently undergoing an 8.6m [pounds sterling] conservation and access project, separately funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and many other bodies, and was perhaps more obviously atttactive for external funding. The development plans concern the site opposite, occupied by three buildings deemed 'no longer fit for purpose'. …
