Christine Walker, one of the most powerful figures in the UK media industry, has resigned as chief executive of Zenith Media and is keeping her future plans secret.

Walker helped turn Zenith into the UK's biggest media buying operation over the past eight years, with total UK billings now exceeding [pounds]577m.

Its clients include a host of top UK advertisers, such as Kingfisher, BMW/Rover, Safeway and Camelot.

Walker's resignation, confirmed by the agency this week, has sparked speculation she is leaving to head the merger of Martin Sorrell's WPP's UK media group. The tie-up between Ogilvy & Mather and J Walter Thompson is expected later this year.

Walker refused to be drawn on her plans and told Marketing: "I am obviously going to do something pretty big and challenging. It's time for a new challenge in a highly focused, hopefully high-energy environment." Asked if the job was in a similar field she said: "I will not throw away 20 years of experience. …
