Simon & Schuster, which claims to be the world's largest English-language book publisher, expects to publish more than 500,000 HTML pages on the site and to generate more than $100 million in Web-related revenues through the sale of books and software over the Internet, books about the Internet, online content, transactions like travel arrangements, and advertising in 1997. Average daily traffic is expected to exceed 1 million hits each day, according to the company.

"The Internet's rapid growth makes a publisher's job--exercising editorial judgment to choose, nurture, and amplify ideas--that much more important," said Jonathan Newcomb, Simon & Schuster's president and CEO. "The Internet provides a whole new way to make information public with immediacy and economy. The online possibilities for a global publisher with 350,000 copyrights are extraordinary. Because the Internet was originally created to deliver content, it is truly redefining the publishing business. Our supersite updates both the printed word and our multiple-media content. While extending our brands and creating new products in cyberspace, it gives readers customized information and options to access and purchase that information."

The following features are among the highlights of the Simon & Schuster site:

* Arthur Frommer's Outspoken Encyclopedia of Travel includes more than 6,000 pages of information about bargain travel from the world's foremost travel expert Arthur Frommer. Components of the encyclopedia include a free, daily online newsletter offering bargain travel information and information on more than 200 cities, including airfare, hotels, maps, car rentals, and restaurants. Frommer's online encyclopedia will be supported by revenues from advertising, book sales, and travel reservations.

* BizInfoSearch is a comprehensive directory of business resources on the Internet, featuring descriptions, reviews, and links to more than 1,000 business information sites.

* CCCnet delivers original interactive educational content to K-12 schools, giving teachers simple and compelling interactive Web projects. …
