It's a Celebration: Dance Magazine Honors Waters, Bausch, Rhodes, and Stiefel

As 2008 drew to a close, Dance Magazine took an evening to celebrate some of the dance field's finest treasures. Sylvia Waters, Pina Bausch, Lawrence Rhodes, and Ethan Stiefel were the guests of honor at the 51st Dance Magazine Awards, which took place in December at Manhattan's Florence Gould Hall. Through dances, speeches, and a film collage made for the event, the four artists were recognized for their devotion to, as Deborah Jowitt said in her presentation to Rhodes, "keep the field we love bristling with beauty and thought."

Opening remarks from Karla Johnson, president of Macfadden Performing Arts Media, included a memory from a past award ceremony to commemorate longtime DM contributor Clive Barnes, who died in November (see "Gratitudes for Attitudes," Feb.). Dance Magazine editor in chief Wendy Perron emceed the evening. Lights dimmed for Alvin Ailey's bittersweet Isba, performed in Waters' honor by three members of Ailey II. Rachel McSween, Chang Yong Sung, and Tyrone Walker poured sincere and generous passion into every step. Waters has directed the junior ensemble for '35 years, cultivating talent for the full company. In presenting her with the award, Judith Jamison thanked her for "making sure that Ailey II is that breath of air and light we seek for higher ground."
