DHS Secretary Napolitano to Speak at Conference

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano will speak at NLC's Congressional City Conference, to be held in Washington, D.C., March 1418.

Since joining the Obama Administration a month ago, Napolitano has taken an aggressive approach to ensuring better coordination with local governments and increasing efficiency within the agency. Within days of her appointment, Napolitano signed two action directives demanding the agency review its coordination with state and local partners on issues ranging from intelligence sharing and emergency coordination to the Federal Emergency Management Agency integration with state and local governments.

This has triggered a significant internal review at DHS coupled with input from stakeholders--including NLC.


Napolitano will address delegates at a general session. She will be part of a lineup of key Administration and Congressional leaders sharing their priorities for the coming year. The conference will also feature sessions with the latest information from federal agency representatives and other technical experts who can help local officials learn how to bring home dollars from the economic recovery package and how to best leverage them with other resources to make a difference in these troubling economic times.

Prior to taking the helm of DHS, Napolitano served as governor of Arizona, where she had been a rising star in American politics. During her time as governor, she was named one of America's Top Five Governors by Time magazine and one of America's top women leaders by Newsweek. …
