It is no secret that I am a fan of Profound's online database (see "Profound: M.A.I.D. for End-Users," ONLINE, July/August 1996). Now Market Analysis and Information, Inc. has rolled out its product on the Web. Optimized to run on Netscape Navigator 2.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer, Profound combines the business-focused content, Adobe Acrobat images, and search features of the online product with the enhanced functionality of the Internet.

Once again, M.A.I.D. does not disappoint. End-users will appreciate the directness and clarity of the interface, and information professionals will be blown away by an Internet-based search engine which nearly matches the savvy of many of our traditional online products.

SEARCH OPTIONS

There are several access points to choose from. WorldSearch Professional enables you to search across all or a selection of the product's databases. (You can search only one database at a time in the online version.) The WorldSearch Professional search option is easy enough for both experienced and novice searchers to use. Clicking on Research Reports, Company Data, News, or Briefings from the main search screen allows you to conduct a more streamlined investigation.

The results screen states the search strategy and database(s) used, followed by a list of hits sorted by database. (This verification of search request is unique to the Internet version; the breakout by database is very nice.) You have the option of viewing the full text, documents in a KWIC format, or the complete table of contents. After selecting an output option, the selected cites and individual price tags are displayed. Contrary to the online version, the Internet version cannot display and print a full document's exploded table of contents with section price tags.

MORE NICE TOUCHES

* In a citation report for the news and wire databases, you can "search for similar news articles" and choose another database and/or enter additional search terms in a free-text box.

* Links to company Web sites are embedded in news and wire stories, but there are not as many company links as you would expect.

* In the Company Briefings database, a simple search on a company name retrieves a basic company snapshot, including its primary and secondary SIC codes. Clicking on one of the SIC codes generates a new search in the Newsline database for articles on the matching industry market sector. Similar links also appear in the snapshots for the Country and Market Briefings.

* Profound's Dossier Manager compiles the titles of reports you have downloaded over the past 24 hours and maintains a log of all downloaded documents over the past 28 days. …
