Congressional City Conference to Focus on Partnership with Federal Government

More than 2,000 local officials are gathered in Washington, D.C., this week to help implement a renewed partnership with the federal government at NLC's Congressional City Conference and to get information about how to effectively use economic recovery resources in their cities.

The main part of the conference gets underway today with the first two of four general sessions that will feature a wide array of officials from President Obama's new Administration.

"NLC is the go-to place about and for cities," said NLC President Kathleen M. Novak, mayor of Northglenn, Colo. "The depth and variety of Administration officials addressing the conference demonstrates the importance of city issues to the White House. We stand ready to work with the federal government as the nation works to recover from this economic crisis and begins to grapple with pressing issues such as rising health care costs and our broken housing system."

Members of the Administration who are speaking at the conference include: Energy Secretary Steven Chu; Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson; Attorney General Eric Holder; Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan; Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood; Valerie Jarrett, White House senior advisor and assistant to the President for intergovernmental relations and public liaison; and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
