Full disclosure: I haven't followed Obama's first hundred days. Our attention has already swung to the tens of thousands of local candidates up for election in 2009. It's enough to consider abolishing the phrase "off-year election." No doubt, for Democrats 2009 is a years of proving the Obama campaign was not an accident of history. We'll see if the GOP is ready to experiment to find the next big thing. With due respect to the party's handful of talented technology-savants, including Cyrus Krohn, Patrick Ruffini, Mindy Finn, David All and Robert Bluey, it remains to be seen whether the Republican Party is ready to overcome a Democratic Party that has assimilated West Coast geeks and money into its DNA.

For 2009, I'm looking for which party, and which consultant will be the innovator. Which party will be first to make microtargeting available to its poorest candidates? Who will make SMS messaging a serious GOTV tool? Which party will teach their down-ballot candidates how to use a list with hundreds of different data points? The heroes of the 2009 cycle are going to be people you've never heard of. That is, until you read about them in Politics.
