On behalf of the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, I wish to extend a very warm welcome to you and other distinguished members of "Team Canada". Since you are also the first official guest of this Government, your visit gives me great pleasure and honour. The useful and amicable discussion that we had this morning and the agreements that we signed today will surely contribute to the strengthening of our bilateral ties and our partnership in the Asia-Pacific region.

For us the name "Canada" stands first of all for decency and noble self-sacrifice in international relations. In every corner of the globe, the red-and-white maple leaf flag is immediately identified with UN peacekeeping forces. Indeed, few countries have contributed as much as Canada to make this world a better place for human-kind.

In Thailand, the red-and-white maple leaf flag is also well known throughout the country wherever the Canadian International Development Agency is present. CIDA's partnership with the Thai Government in the sustainable development of our country has built an immense reserve of goodwill towards Canada among the Thai people. As Thailand reaches out to our neighbouring countries to improve the welfare of their people, we also look to Canada as our natural partner in contributing to the sustainable development of the Greater Mekong Region, with its more than 170 million industrious people and abundant natural resources. Canada's leadership in the management of the environment and natural resources, in the building of transportation and communications infrastructure, and in the harnessing of energy will be welcomed by the countries of the Greater Mekong Region. …
