Lycos and Inmagic Team Up on Intranet Spidering Products

Article excerpt

Lycos, Inc. has announced that it has joined with Inmagic, Inc. to launch two Windows NT-based corporate intranet spidering products that integrate Lycos' spidering technology with Inmagic's search and publishing engine.

Spiders are server software products that gather and index information about documents residing-on an intranet, automatically building a catalog database that corporate personnel can search from any location using a standard Web browser. The next-generation spiders produced from the Lycos-Inmagic partnership are the first intranet search engines to include a "word wheel" Java applet, according to the announcement. The Lycos-Inmagic team has provided the ability to add and search on "meta data" such as document concepts, thus enabling access beyond simple document content. The companies announced the availability of 45-day, free trial versions of the spiders via open download under Try It! at Inmagic's site, http://www.inmagic.com.

The first of the two products offered is the Lycos Intranet Spider. …
