* Mark Ibold, former Pavement member and current touring bassist for Sonic Youth, has worked just about every odd job imaginable: hand model, wardrobe assistant, bartender (a position he still holds at New York's Great Jones Cafe) ... We caught up with him over lunch at Prune to hear about his latest gig, food styling, and how that fits in with his musical career.

You styled some pretty big cookbooks. You did Amy Sedaris' and the Momofuku one just recently.

Yeah, but they're both ... Neither of them were like full-on, like what I consider to be real food styling.


What do you consider to be real food styling?

Well, with Momofuku, those guys were cooking all the food. When you're doing a food styling job, generally you make all the food. In most cases it's somebody else's recipe, but you're taking that recipe and thinking about what could go wrong with it and how to make it look as good as possible. Sometimes a recipe will turn out something that tastes good but doesn't really look that great.

What kind of work did you do on the Momofuku cookbook?

Normally when you work on a cookbook the recipes are all written down and then tested in a test kitchen and then they take Polaroids. On this, I didn't even know what we were going to be shooting from day to day. The guys were just bringing stuff out, and I'd be like, Whoa, look at that. I didn't even know what the ingredients were. On a normal shoot, you have all of the ingredients and you have a game plan. …
