A recent poll reveals patients spend twice as much time waiting for their physician as they actually spend being treated. Of those surveyed, 49 percent said they spent 20 minutes or more in the waiting room, with 54 percent waiting at least 10 minutes in the examining room before the physician arrived.

However, for most of those surveyed, the amount of time spent with their doctor was apparently quality time, with 49 percent rating their physician as "excellent" or "good" at listening to questions and answering concerns.

The random telephone poll of 1,000 people from across the United States, conducted by Physicians Information Exchange, illustrates a need to make improvements in healthcare efficiency to make physicians' offices work better and improve the patients' experience without disturbing positive physician-patient relationships, according to Rod Nelson, president of ATAC (Accounting for Time, Activity and Cost) CPA Healthcare Network.
