It's All about Inspiration

I don't know about you, but I could use a little inspiration amidst the endless string of reports on the current state of the economy. The subject was certainly prevalent at the recent International Artexpo New York, however, unlike the thralls of media reports that tend to dwell on the negatives, the art professionals I spoke with at the show were focusing on anything but. Yes, they acknowledged the downturn and the challenges it brings, but more importantly, they collaboratively discussed proactive solutions to the problems they faced and demonstrated a level of passion and perseverance that was truly inspiring.

Inspiration is really what the art world is all about. It's the hook that keeps our collectors coming back for more, and it's the reason we, as art professionals, do what we do best. Artexpo certainly provided me with a healthy dose of inspiration. Countless artists and artworks uplifted me at the 2009 show, many of which you'll see in the pages of this month's extensive post-show report (page 26). But what I didn't necessarily expect was the number of individuals who inspired me from a business standpoint.

Given the current economic climate, I'd like to dedicate this column to them so I may spread their passionate, proactive outlook to hopeful art professionals, near and far. With that, I'll leave you with 10 Motivational Words of Wisdom, spoken by the gracious participants of our live panel discussion on "Forecasting the Art Market in the Next 18 Months."
