Three safety and health conferences promise a wealth of opportunities for safety learning and networking.

Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene

The 12th annual Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene (PCIH) will be held at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1. Consultant Edward R. Hermann, Ph.D., PE, CIH, will deliver the keynote address Monday, Sept. 29, on the conference's theme, "Striking a Balance."

Dr. Monty L. Herr of Lawrence Livermore Labs will moderate a general session Monday on the measurement of industrial hygiene performance in business. Daniel Agopsowicz and Ellen Confer will discuss the occupational health service business model used at Exxon Paramins. ARCO's Larry Birkner will then describe the "Return on Health and Safety Investment" (ROHSI) project being conducted by Arthur Anderson & Co. The project advocates using existing financial accounting methods to assess the value of safety and health spending in a company.

Monday afternoon, Michael Jaylock of Rohm & Haas Toxicology Lab, former AIHA president Jeremiah Lynch and Keith Tait of Pfizer Inc. will examine "Risk Assessment and implementation in a LessRegulated Society."

PCIH attendees will get a broad perspective on past standards-setting and compliance policies, and what could be done to improve them, on Tuesday, Sept. 30. OSHA's Charles Adkins and Charles Gordon, Stewart C. Burkhammer of Bechtel, John Henshaw of Monsanto Co., and Joseph Holtshouser of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will participate in a session moderated by former OSHA chief John Pendergrass.

On Sunday, Sept. 28, Professional Development Courses will include topics such as indoor air quality, applied ergonomics, auditing occupational safety and health programs, risk assessment, safety information on the internet and personal protective equipment.

Champions of Safety

Safety and health professionals, company managers and safety committee members will have a unique opportunity to learn about successful safety practices at the Champions of Safety Conference. Sponsored by Occupational Hazards, the conference will take place Oct. 2-3 at the Westin William Penn in Pittsburgh.
