"Tommy Gun Angel," the first track on Bardo Pond's new Matador CD, Lapse, begins where you might expect a song to end--with the sound of a deeply fried lone guitar signal on the brink of breaking apart.

"That sound is a Big Muff with the sustain all the way up," explains Michael Gibbons, coguitarist with his brother John. To create the band's epic space-rock journeys, Michael plays a '67 Gibson SG Junior through a Marshall Mark II Lead 50-watt half-stack with a 4x12 cabinet. "I also have my Boss equalizer pedal set with an emphasis on the lower mids, and a dip in the highs. Also, my brother and I tune down a half-step to E??. Later in the song, when I want to push the tone to the next level, the delay comes on."

Michael has three delays to choose from: an Ibanez analog delay ("I only use that when things really get intense"), a Boss pitch-shifter/ delay and a DigiTech eight-second delay/sampler. …
