LEXIS-NEXIS recently announced that Hans Gieskes has been appointed president and chief executive officer. Gieskes has been with the parent company of LEXIS-NEXIS, Reed Elsevier, for 19 years. Previously, he served as vice chairman of the company's legal division, which operates 14 legal publishing companies in 12 countries. As vice chairman he ran and now continues to lead LEXIS-NEXIS' operations in Europe. From 1992-1996, Gieskes was CEO of Bonaventura, a publisher of consumer and special-interest magazines and one of Reed Elsevier's businesses in the Netherlands. Prior to that, Gieskes worked in various sales, technology, and general management positions with Elsevier Science. Gieskes holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Netherlands Institute of Marketing.

Electronic Online Systems (EOS) International has announced that Mark Patterson has been appointed executive vice president of international operations. Patterson has been with EOS International since 1983 after graduating magna cum laude from the University of California at Davis. In 1989, he was appointed to the board of directors as secretary and promoted to vice president, sales and marketing. Then in 1996, Mark was named the managing director of the EOS European headquarters: office and: relocated to London, He has since returned toddle EOS headquarters office in Carlsbad and: now oversees EOS Internation-al's inter, national office, as well as global marketing.

Patterson appointed Tim Twine as his replacement managing director of EOS London upon his departure in August. Twine has been with EOS International since 1994 when he was recruited from an EOS customer site at Hammersmith and West London College Library. When Data Trek acquired IME in 1996, Twine and his staff moved to the London office, where he was appointed manager of customer services for the newly combined company of EOS International, London. Twine earned a B.A. with honors from the University of Manchester, as well as a diploma in information and library studies from the University of Strathclyde.

Tony Leow has recently been named the managing director of EOS International's Asia-Pacific headquarters office in Singapore. Leow has been with EOS since 1995 as its Asia-Pacific business development manager responsible for exploring market opportunities in the developing nations of the region. Before joining EOS, Tony was the business development manager for EOS International's sister company, The Faxon Company, and their Asia-Pacific regional office. He also established Faxon's Southeast Asia office, where he held the position of general manager until 1993. Leow graduated with honors from Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts. He received a master's degree in library and information science from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, as well as a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

SOLINET has named Angee Baker as director of its newly formed Electronic Information Services (EIS) unit, which includes licensing activities, the ASERL Electronic Resources project, the Woodruff Foundation grant, the Monticello Electronic Library project, and Preservation Services.

Baker comes to SOLINET from the Thomson Corporation (Gale Research and Information Access Company), where she served most recently as vice president of market and business development. …
