Regional Policy : Danube Region Strategy Due before End 2010

The participants in last week's European Council meeting invited the European Commission to present an EU strategy for the Danube river region before the end of 2010. The strategy should aim "to introduce the Danube as a priority objective for the European Council,' said Romanian President, Traian Basescu, one of the main advocates of this project, during a press conference held in Brussels, on 19 June. The project forms part of the EU's climate change and sustainable development strategy, and enjoys the support of all the countries along the Danube. Accordingly, by the end of 2010, the Commission must present a recovery policy for the region. "It is a relatively short time in which the Commission should focus its human and financial resources on a strategy to use the Danube as an alternative to road and rail transport and as an economic and social development tool."
