He's a Geographer?

This month, the curtain falls on our long-running In conversation series. In its place, we're starting a new department that we've called I'm a geographer.

When I first started working on Geographical, I was surprised by the number of people I spoke to who had studied geography at university--and the affection with which they viewed that period of their lives. From what I can gather, the subject doesn't enjoy anything like this sort of popularity in my home country of Australia.

And over the years, we've regularly stumbled across people in the public eye who had a hidden history of geographical endeavour. This was the seed from which I'm a geographer grew--wouldn't it be fun to 'out' some of these people, in the process demonstrating the incredible diversity of opportunities out there for people with degrees in geography and related subjects? We could also include people who didn't necessarily hold degrees, but whose work effectively allowed them to claim with some degree of accuracy, 'I'm a geographer'

There are certain to be a number of surprises along the way, not to mention the odd bit of controversy at some of our choices, but I hope that the department will be both as interesting and entertaining as In conversation has been. …
