Congressional Information Service, Inc. (CIS) has announced that it has made an alliance with LEXIS-NEXIS. In a separate announcement, the company has announced that it released its new Web product, Statistical Universe.

Congressional Information Service to Represent LEXIS-NEXIS

CIS and LEXIS-NEXIS have announced a development and marketing alliance designed to better serve the special needs of college, university, and public libraries. The arrangement will include the cooperative design, development, marketing, and sales of Web-based information products, according to CIS.

Under the new arrangement, CIS and LEXIS-NEXIS will jointly develop information products utilizing the traditional strengths of each company--CIS's editorial skills and knowledge of academic libraries with LEXIS-NEXIS's technological expertise in building online information products.

"With CIS's proven record of developing premium quality products for the academic library market, it is in an outstanding position to create and support valuable new electronic products that harness the underlying muscle of LEXIS-NEXIS's technology," said Tim Davies, chief operating officer of National Information Services, the LEXIS-NEXIS business unit to which Congressional Information Service reports. "CIS will bolster service to educational institutions large and small with strong customer service and outstanding new product offerings developed in close consultation with users."

The newly launched CIS UNIVERSE line of Web-based information products is an outcome of CIS/LEXIS-NEXIS cooperation, and includes Statistical Universe, Congressional Universe, and Academic Universe.

UNIVERSE marketing and sales operations for the academic and public library markets will be combined under CIS management to strengthen the service to libraries provided by both companies. The company says that the new arrangement supports CIS's strategic imperative of meeting the rapidly evolving needs of librarians and researchers for electronic information products while expanding use of LEXIS-NEXIS information services by students, faculty, and librarians. (Traditional LEXIS-NEXIS law school library sales are excluded from the new alliance.)

Statistical Universe

CIS has also announced that it has unveiled Statistical Universe, a one-stop location on the Web for current and historical government statistics.

According to CIS, more than half of the requests at public, college, and university library reference desks are for statistics. While much valuable statistical information is available on the Web, until now the company says that conducting comprehensive and authoritative research of dozens of Web sites has been a hit-or-miss proposition. …
