Excalibur Announces Strategy for Video Analysis Technology

Article excerpt

Excalibur Technologies, a leader in know ledge-retrieval solutions, has announced a two-tiered strategy to deliver advanced video analysis technologies. According to the company, the first tier is directed to developers who build advanced video applications, and the second is a suite of applications to enable organizations and end users to analyze, index, retrieve, and manipulate analog and digital video assets in an intranet/Internet environment.

The first tier of Excalibur's strategy focuses on launching Excalibur's Video Analysis Engine (VAE), a software developers' kit, to large integrators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) interested in developing leading-edge video applications. Excalibur says it already is partnering with industry giants such as Microsoft, which has agreed to market the Excalibur VAE with Microsoft NetShow.

Excalibur's VAE is based on Excalibur's pattern-recognition and scene-change technologies, which the company expects to become a universal standard for application developers to analyze, index, and retrieve video in order to perform additional processing on the video or on specific frames.

The second tier of the strategy, according to the company, will deliver a comprehensive suite of products incorporating the VAE to more than 3,000 companies in media, entertainment, and broadcasting that need to automate the analysis, indexing, cataloging, viewing, searching, and retrieval of their video assets.

Excalibur's new family of products will provide content-based, scalable, high-performance retrieval for multiple types of visual analog and digital media.

It combines the strengths of Excalibur's advanced technology for video analysis and indexing with Excalibur RetrievalWare for indexing closed-captioned or other textual material associated with the video. Excalibur expects to begin shipping Excalibur VAE and the related suite of products later this spring; pricing is yet to be determined.

The company outlined some applications and benefits provided by the new Excalibur video technology/products: 0 News organizations will use the VAE, embedded in applications, to index new and archived video footage. This will allow them to quickly find specific clips stored among vast quantities of archived footage and quickly repurpose the content.

* Late-breaking video content can be rapidly shared across multiple news outlets. …
