A MAGAZINE REDESIGN, like the change in administrations, is a chance for a new beginning. Magazines don't do this kind of overhaul every four years--our last one was in 2001--but such transitions do offer the opportunity not only to present a fresh look but to revisit first principles as well.

Our art director, Ed Spivey Jr., who has designed every issue of Sojourners since 1974, claims this redesign (which he did with the able guidance of Bates Creative Group and Sabatier Consulting) is his last. Spivey might well be the only art director in the country who also writes a humor column--he recently received national magazine honors in both design and humor categories. We feel the magazine you're holding in your hands is further evidence that he's just getting better.

Along with the new look, we're introducing four new columnists in this issue: environmentalist Bill McKibben, pastor Joel C. Hunter, author Cathleen Falsani, and film critic Gareth Higgins. Next month we'll welcome environmental activist Majora Carter, pastor Adam Hamilton, and interfaith youth worker Eboo Patel to our pages. We'll also be bringing you regular profiles of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in their communities, as well as practical "how-to" columns on all manner of peace and justice concerns. …
