There's plenty in this issue to bite into, starting with Rich Heffern's piece on the new food documentary (Page 1) and John Allen's report on what was not on the U.S. bishops' agenda in San Antonio. Our East and West section recognizes the interplay and cross-fertilization of world religious traditions. Demetria Martinez treks to the U.S./Mexican border to offer an interesting firsthand report. Kudos to NCR editor at large Tom Roberts for winning the Egan Award for Journalistic Excellence. Catholic Relief Services, sponsor of the award, announced it earlier this month. Roberts' winning article, "Siding with kids to end cruelty" (NCR, May 2, 2008), profiled the plight some 300,000 exploited Haitian children, captured into the restavek system in which they live and work as virtual slaves for wealthier Haitian families. The Egan award recognizes journalists who have written about humanitarian and social justice issues for Catholic publications in the United States. This year, winners receive a paid trip to Latin America to see Catholic Relief Services-supported programs that assist migrants and others living in poverty. Now in its 14th year, the award is named after Eileen Egan, Catholic Relief Services' first professional staff layperson, who devoted four decades of her life to assisting refugees and helping the poor in Europe, Asia and Latin America. …
