'Summer School' Is in Session

Article excerpt

Some conferences with long-standing heritages are on the lineup for the summer and early fall this year, showcasing hot topics such as knowledge management and the semantic web. Here's a closer look at some of the season's top contenders.

IFLA

One of the year's major events is the annual General Conference and Assembly of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA; www.ifla.org/annual-conference/ifla75), which will be held Aug. 23-27 in Milan, Italy. The 75th annual conference features the theme of Libraries Create Futures: Building on Cultural Heritage. Each IFLA section program also has its own subtheme. Since the conference has a significant international content, 18 satellite conferences have been arranged, most of which are in Milan or in other Italian cities. Details can be found on the Satellite Meetings webpage (www.ifla.org/annualconference/ ifla75/satelliteen.htm).

DEXA Society

The Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA) Society arranges a series of concurrent conferences each year on databases and intelligent systems, which includes knowledge management, semantics, taxonomies, and related topics. This year, the 20th meeting in the series will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 4 on the campus of Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. Eight conferences and 14 workshops are listed on the website (http://dexa.org) with links to detailed information on each one. The following meetings will be of particular interest to IT readers:

* The 20th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA '09)

* The 11th International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK '09)

* The 8th International Workshop on Web Semantics (WebS '09)

* The 1st International Workshop on Biological Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (BIOKDD '09)

* The 3rd International Workshop for Multimedia Data Mining and Management (MDMM '09)

* The 6th International Workshop on Text-Based Information Retrieval (TIR '09)

* The 1st International Workshop on Modeling and Visualization of XML and Semantic Web Data (MoViX '09)

Knowledge Management and the Semantic Web

The chart on the previous page features seven conferences on knowledge management and related topics. Although many emphasize the business angle, there are several others to interest information professionals.

Here are several other conferences covering the semantic web that are on tap, all outside the U.S. (note that two of the DEXA Society conferences will also present aspects of the semantic web). Many of these conferences focus specifically on research in metadata, ontologies, or informetrics.

Data mining is a technology used in detecting semantic patterns in a corpus of information. The Salford Data Mining Conference (http://salforddatamining.com), which will be held Aug. 23-25 in San Diego, will focus on practical data mining techniques as well as analysis of complexities in the retrieved data.

Publishing and Related Topics

Several conferences hosted by organizations such as the ALPSP, the Association of American Publishers, and the American Medical Association will cover specialized topics for scholarly publishers. Since the field of scholarly publishing covers a diverse array of topics, the move toward electronic publishing has spawned unique issues, especially in ethics. Consider the following scholarly publishing events:

* The 6th International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication (www.ama-assn.org/ public/peer/peerhome.htm) will be held Sept. 10-12 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

* The 1st Conference on Open Access Scholarly Publishing (COASP; www.oaspa.org/coasp) will be held Sept. 14-16 in Lund, Sweden.

* The European Association of Science Editors (EASE) 10th General Assembly and Conference: Integrity in Science Communication (www . …
