We Owe It to Ourselves

The AVA convention and trade show in Las Vegas could draw the largest number of attendees in recent years. With headliners like Leonard Nimoy, author Stan Davis and motivational speaker Emory Austin, five pre-convention seminars to choose from and hundreds of discipline-specific sessions, vocational educators can't afford to miss out. The pre-convention seminars include:

* Designing a School-to-Careers System

* Integrating Academic and Vocational Education Curriculum

* Connecting Standards to Strengthen Currriculum

* Using Technology to Enhance Classroom Teaching

* Creating Successful Career Pathways for All Students

But perhaps outshining all those bells and whistles is a simple ideal - that we should take advantage of every opportunity to improve as vocational educators. We owe it to the future of our profession. We owe it to our students. But most of all we owe it to ourselves.

The AVA convention is the premier professional development event for anyone involved in the vocational education field. At no other time and nowhere else can we convene with so many colleagues to share ideas and compare experiences.

As attendees will see on December 11, the convention also is a time to showcase our best. The 15 regional award winners in three categories - Vocational Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Vocational Educator and Outstanding New Vocational Teacher - will accept their awards . and then the national winners among them will be announced.
