Eu/croatia : New Prime Minister Wants to Unblock Eu Membership Talks

Invested on 6 July by the Croatian parliament, the country's new Prime Minister, Jadranka Kosor, intends to overcome the blockade by Slovenia of her country's accession negotiations. Kosor declared she was "convinced that the talks will be unblocked and that we will finish this work [the negotiations] by the end of the year".

Elected at the head of the Conservative HDZ party, the 56-year-old Kosor, a former journalist who has switched to politics, was appointed prime minister following the startling announcement, on 1 July, by the former head of the government, Ivo Sanader, that he was giving up his duties and quitting political life more than two years before the end of his mandate.

Like her predecessor, Kosor stressed the share of responsibility which lies with the EU to settle the border dispute between Ljubljana and Zagreb, which has been blocking accession negotiations since the end of 2008. …
