FOR GAY RIGHTS ACTIVISTS, the National Equality March on Washington for LGBT rights in October could channel mounting frustration into fundamental change. Or not. It all depends on whom you ask.

Gay pundits like Bil Browning, editor in chief of blog The Bilerico Project, have called the demonstration an ill-timed mess that will siphon energy and resources from more tangible goals. "If we had enough time to plan this out, if the economy weren't horrible, then it would be time to have the march," he says. "But now, after Proposition 8, is not the time. The only message will be that 'gays and lesbians came out to march for gay marriage and not a lot showed up.'"

"Wrong," says march director Cleve Jones. The rally, scheduled for October 11, is not just about marriage equality in California. Fraying tolerance for the federal government's inaction on "don't ask, don't tell," the Defense of Marriage Act, and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act promises a sizable crowd. "The march is about expressing our anger with the administration and with Congress in a public way," Jones says. …
