This Isle's on Fire

Article excerpt

D.C. DWELLERS HAVE REHOBOTH BEACH IN DELAWARE, and Chicago denizens can escape to Saugatuck, Mich., but the most celebrated resort destination for urban gays remains Fire Island, a sliver of sand 30 miles long and a half-mile wide. Even though it takes two trains, a bus, and a ferry to get there from Manhattan, gays and the bohemian bet set have braved the journey since the '20s to escape New York City's sweltering summers, reconnect with nature, and party. Just as the season was beginning to sizzle, we quizzed some flamers on their island experiences and wanderlust in general.
