Michele Losier made an extraordinarily auspicious debut at the Sydney Opera House Mar. 12 as Charlotte in Werther. She was half of a stunning artistic partnership that made this revival of Opera Australia's 20-year-old production by far its most successful airing of Massenet classic.

Aldo Di Toro played the title role grippingly, morphing with consummate skill from the over-the-top romanticism of his opening paean to the beauties of nature to the depths of despair that eventually drive him to suicide.

Losier brought her less demonstrative character to life most convincingly--never hinting for an instant that her marital fidelity was in danger of compromise even as her heart obviously wished to respond to Werther's extravagant passion. Clad throughout in severe black, she maintained her dignity steadfastly as Di Toro's life crumbled. Her big Act III scene was a triumph of expressiveness and musicality. Losier's rich and powerful mezzo easily filled the 1,500-seat Opera Theatre, and her partnership with Di Toro was impeccable and dramatically intense. …
