Regional Dance America has once again been invited to perform at the Jackson, Mississippi, USA International Ballet Competition, to be held June 13-28. This is the third time the Jackson competition has generously extended to RDA an invitation to present a full concert. RDA companies have performed there in 1991 and 1995.

Sixty-five companies competed for the honor of representing our country's grassroots dance movement to the illustrious international audience; eight were chosen. They represent all five RDA regions--Northeast, Southeast. Southwest, Mid-States, and Pacific. The winners were chosen last June at the National Festival in Houston; judges were Sally Brayley Bliss, Bill Evans, Robert Barnett, Jeffrey Gribler, and the late Maria Grandy.

The technical level of dance in America keeps improving at an amazing rate . The representative companies chosen to perform come from small towns and large, and young choreographers and seasoned company directors are responsible for the dances. The styles range from classical ballet and modern dance to Chaplinesque comedy.

It is interesting to note that three of the nine choreographers chosen--Leslie Jane Pessemier, Charles Maple, and Amy Moore Morton--are all alumni of RDA's annual workshop, the Performance/Choreography Conference. Pessemier and Morton were both Monticello scholarship winners, and Pessemier has been the director of choreography for three of the conferences.
