New Goss Ecoset Dryer Cuts Gas Use, Emissions

Goss International has introduced the Ecoset web offset dryer. Based on Goss Ecocool technology, the new heatset dryer can reduce energy consumption and emissions by 50% or more.

Ecoset's design eliminates the dryer's cooling section, which traditionally pre-cools the web ahead of the chill rolls to reduce solvent condensation. Owing to the small-diameter Ecocool chill rollers' cooling capability, the web can move directly from drying to chilling without condensation occurring. With no cooling section, the dryer's overall intake of cold air is reduced, with a subsequent reduction in gas consumption and emission.

According to Bas Klaver, product manager at the Goss International facility in Boxmeer, the Netherlands, where Goss dryers are designed and manufactured, the small-diameter chill rollers "eliminate solvent condensation regardless of print speed, paper quality or ink coverage."

In addition to environmental benefits, Ecoset has a smaller footprint and provides greater productivity than conventional dryers with separate chill sections. "With a conventional chill stand, condensation is a well-known problem, which means that for certain job types printers need to reduce press speed by up to 20% in order to avoid damage to the web," Klaver said in a statment. …
